‘Brave’ Or ‘Braver’? Disney Warns UK Production Company Over Copycat DVDs discusses how Disney is currently threatening a British indie company with legal action over the packaging of its DVDs. Some examples are as follows (just so you don't have to google them) :
Disney's statement: “People place great trust in the quality and creativity of Disney, and when it appears that another company is causing confusion among Disney consumers we will act to protect ourselves and the consumer.”
This article caught my eye because well, Disney is a huge company. To see that it is successful doesn't mean that it has problems with copycats. Also, the resemblance to the covers are quite shocking and even more so if you have watched the Disney version. (For example in Brave the main character heads to stones that looks like those on the cover of Braver.)
I wonder how Disney is going to settle this issue, maybe stop the production of Brightspark's DVDs? How can you prevent copyright... I find that companies are struggling with that. Not only the music industry but also film companies such as Disney. If I became a filmmaker, putting all my hard work on designing a cover and such just to find out an indie company copied it and sold it for cheaper would make me infuriated.
I understand that sometimes there are parodies out there of Disney movies but there has never been covers that are misleading. Every one has their own interpretation and there are different stories that no one truly owns. Such as Snow White and other fairy tales by the Grim Brothers. The Frog Princess and the The Princess and the Frog truly shows how Brightspark is imitating Disney as well as their title Braver because Brave was actually written by Disney.
Although, Brightspark is just trying to make a profit and allow families cheap entertainment. So as a student and consumer it makes me wonder if I was the cause of this. Or if other consumers were. If other consumers couldn't afford Disney is it wrong for another company to accommodate those needs? Well, if it is borderline copyright it might.
In my personal opinion, Disney should try their best to stop copyright on their franchise. It's what a normal company would do, try to protect its merchandise and its creations. Others shouldn't steal other ideas. After all, creative ideas are hard to come by.

This is actually pretty funny, but its a total screw to Disney.
ReplyDeletei feel like this is not such a big thing cause i know D
ReplyDeleteDisney has seen it's share of copiers, in its lifetime.
I find this really funny because if they were trying to not get caught and pull it off well... They obviously didn't try hard enough. You can so tell they're jacking Disney, it's funny how dumb this is.
ReplyDeleteAs a consumer, if i wanted to watch a Disney movie, I wanna watch the Disney version not some cheap imitation. There was a time that I had asked my dad to buy a movie that I really wanted to watch he told me he bought it and when he got home i was really disappointed to see that the movie he bought was some other imitation and not the actual movie I wanted to watch. It wasn't a Disney movie, but having this does confuse the consumers. And it is not cool.
