This week, the box office has moviegoing up 41% from last year. Also, some movies have finally performed normally since July's Aurora shooting tragedy. Although that event will not be forgotten, normalcy is finally entering the industry. Furthermore, this weekend, the main stars of the moviegoing area are Taken 2 and Hotel Transylvania, both having low review ratings

Its interesting to see that he top two movies have such low ratings. Be it through critics or consumers that are leaving comments and reviews. Nonetheless, ‘Taken 2′ Kidnaps Weekend For #1 & $50M As Moviegoers Return To Late Night Shows; Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’ Flops $11.1M.

The article goes on to say, "Action sequel starring Liam Neeson hit $50M despite Fox attempts to lowball expectations at around mid-$30sM. It’s now the 2nd biggest October opening weekend record (behind Paranormal Activity 3‘s $52.6M) but also the highest PG13 opener in October ever." Although, Taken 2 did well in numbers, the reviews do not look so good. I wonder if this relates to things such as the movie being too repetitive to similar to the first one. Too similar for peoples' tastes apparently.
Personally, just from watching the trailer, Liam Neeson talking on the phone threatening the baddies seemed overplayed. So to me, it had a seemingly eerie similarity to Taken. However, when exactly does a franchise go wrong ? For example Transformers... even though many have made the sequels into a joke, has a fourth sequel in the making and money is still being made. Is a movie successful by its profits or through the reception of its audience? Even though Tim Burton's Frankenweenie underperformed, the audience was still satisfied with the film. Thus, this is why this article was interesting, because as a filmmaker it makes me think about the decisions I would have to make in the future. Such as to push through with a sequel or not. The sequel could be a flop, make money and still be poorly received, or vice versa.
Speaking student wise and consumer wise, with Taken 2 still earning a pretty hefty amount over the weekend, actually sparks my interest. However, because of the low ratings being left behind, I'm not sure if I would rather go see another movie that seems interesting and that I could actually leave satisfied with.
Regardless, are you going to watch Taken 2? And what do you think creates a successful movie?

  1. I haven't even watched Taken yet -_- I keep telling myself to make time to watch it but I can never find the time. When I found out that there was going to be a Taken 2, I pretty much kind of disliked myself. Now, I have two movies to catch up on. Sigh. Still, despite not having seen either movies, I know that they were pretty successful, so I have high standards for both movies when the time comes for me to actually watch them.

  2. I haven't seen Taken 2 yet, but I really want to because the first one was really good. Yet, the critics' reviews have been pretty harsh which I thought was a bit surprising because I felt like the first Taken had gained fans. In spite of the reviews though, the film has been a commercial success which just goes on show that the ordinary consumers matter more than the professional critics because the consumers are the ones that bring about the success.
P.S Jea, we are going to have to have a movie night with Ashley soon so that you can catch up on all your movies! :)

  3. Thats weird its either the critics are being really bad , or the movie goers are being really stupid . Both are pretty probable .
